Fierce Winds Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to stay indoors as severe gales strike the nation.

Intense winds hitting speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes without power and forced authorities to halt more than 100 air travel services, according to local media.

These gusts are impacting the complete southern region and lower areas of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced infrequent red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in core zones including Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and prepare for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Response

The power cut appears to be affecting homes mainly in the southern region, although authorities state that power was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights entering and leaving the city have been halted due to the gusts, whereas various routes and public facilities are also closed.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Labor Protests Amid Extreme Weather

The powerful gales on today occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been called a "mega strike", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the severe conditions has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or called off.

Comparable winds are affecting the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the country's outback.

Authorities have announced fire bans for concern about wildfires.
