{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event happened on the third lap when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body
"On lap three, safety personnel were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred following that moment"
