Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Head James Comey Files Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Misleading Lawmakers
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's legal representative entered the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.
His attorney stated he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple factors including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was charged soon after Trump pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.
Legal Proceedings
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative advised the judge they intended to submit multiple motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, stating the government's case was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to take over the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his examination into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
The former director appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.
Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the court.
Previous Events
Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about a few months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
While in office, the director sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing criticism from Republicans as well.
Current Allegations
The federal government claim the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments
In a video the former director posted to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"We have been aware for years that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."
The charges against Mr Comey emerged after Donald Trump published on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, charge James Comey and others.
